The Doon School is India’s most well known and most highly regarded all boys’ boarding school. The school is academically selective and attracts boys from all over India and from many the countries around the world. Established in 1935 and based firmly upon the British public school
model, The Doon School’s commitment to social service, leadership, and academic rigour prepares boys for university at home and all over the globe. The Doon School offers the Indian board of ISC/ISCE as well as the IB. In recent years, the interest in applying to the US has almost tripled. Boys have applied for and been accepted in to Ivy League colleges such as Brown, Harvard, Princeton, Duke, Dartmouth,
Cornell, UPenn and Yale as well as top liberal arts and sciences colleges such as Chicago, Williams, Amherst, Tufts, Oberlin, Middlebury, Wesleyan and Pomona and Claremont McKenna. Multiple and regular offers have come from Kelly School of Business, Northwestern, George Town, Franklin and Marshall, UCLA and UCB.
Whilst economics and engineering majors are still very popular, a much wider approach to study is now acknowledged by boys and parents. Such course choices are increasingly featuring music, film making, and history of art, history, philosophy, math, physics and international relations.
The Doon School now seeks to appoint a well qualified and enthusiastic careers counselor who will specialize in advising boys through the whole of the US application process. This will include parent liaison and building long lasting and supportive relationships with the staff that provide the teacher recommendation as well as the wider knowledge of the boys concerned. The successful applicant will need to be up to date with latest practice in careers guidance and have a proven track record in advising and guiding boys through the common application process and in particular the essay preparation and then the experience and skill to advise and guide boys with
the supplementary essays. He/she will need to be as comfortable with boys applying to the Ivy League colleges as smaller and less well known ones and be experienced with advising boys whose course interests are diverse and whose academic backgrounds just as varied. Experience of a similar academically selective boarding environment would be an advantage but not a necessity. The successful candidate will need to like boys and be prepared to ensure that the guidance process if fair and equal for all and enables each boy to maximize his chances to acquire his first college or university choice, in an increasingly competitive market place in and
out of India
The successful candidate will be joining a dynamic and experienced department which offers comprehensive careers curriculum taught from year 9. There is a full programme of psychometric tests, occupational guidance and work taster days with much more in the pipe line. There is a department library with a full range of paper and soft copy resources including naviance software. The Doon School requires all boys to take the PSAT and is a SAT centre. It provides experienced SAT and ACT training and is a member of OACAC and the College Board. In addition to the US, boys frequently apply to multiple countries which also include the
UK, Canada, Hong Kong and Singapore as well as India. There is a substantial programme of visiting admissions tutors, fairs and visits in and out of school to ensure that boys and their parents as well as the staff are kept fully informed of the fast paced and dynamic environment that is the Higher Education. The successful candidate will need to be both a team player and a self-starter, sharing knowledge and latest practice with the team and the wider school community as expected of any experienced teaching professional.
He/she will have a school contract and will be employed exclusively by The Doon School in India.
There is flexibility in how the candidate will work between the US or other place of residence and India. Please contact Mrs Namrata Pandey, Head of Careers Information, Education and Guidance Department at firstname.lastname@example.org for further details of the post and to view the school
