Providing Information

Facebook users in India can now make voice calls via Facebook Messenger.

Following the roll out of the feature, the Facebook and Facebook Messenger mobile apps now offer a ‘Free Call’ option in the chat window’s menu button on Android and ‘I’ button on iPhone. Through the option users can make free voice calls to other users on the social network. The feature is available on both iOS and Android phones. It works on 3G as well as Wi-Fi networksAlso, while users won’t incur any charges for the calls, they’ll still be paying for data (or use up data credit if they subscribe to a plan) consumed to the telecom service provider.

On Android devices, an incoming call shows up like a normal phone call with the calling party’s full screen picture. On an iPhone, the call is denoted by a push notification. Calls can only be made between users who have the Facebook or Facebook Messenger app installed on their phone. It is not available on the web version of Facebook Messenger.

Facebook first introduced the feature for iOS users in US and Canada in January 2013. It was extended to Android users in April 2013.

Interestingly, the introduction of the feature comes shortly after mobile messaging app WhatsApp, which was recently acquired by Facebook, announced plans to introduce free voice calling.
