Since the time it was introduced, there were a series of debates as to whether the CMAT can replace tests like the Common Admission Test and Xavier Aptitude Test to be the single entrance test for admission to B-schools. Surviving a few controversies over the last few years.
A number of management institutions resisted the test and took the legal recourse requesting for the court’s intervention on the matter.
Conducted by the AICTE, CMAT is one of the major management entrance tests in the country. It is the only test for admission to MBA programmes in AICTE-approved institutions and university departments of all the states, and one of the five tests for PGDM programmes for 2015-16. Held twice a year, the next edition of CMAT will be conducted in two shifts at more than 60 locations in India and is the only test for admission to MBA programmes in AICTE-approved institutions and university departments of all the states.
Each candidate is eligible to appear for both the editions of the computer-based test in a year. The admission for 2015-16 will be conducted on the basis of the CMAT scores in September 2014 and February 2015. CMAT is a multiple-choice test, delivered in four sections in three hours. It contains 100 questions, with 25 questions in each section. Four marks are awarded for a correct answer and one mark is deducted for wrong answers. Candidates who are in the final year of their bachelor’s degree programme or who have appeared in the final-year examination from a recognised university are eligible to appear.
With more than 3,000 schools accepting its scores, CMAT gives students an opportunity to secure one of the nearly four lakh seats in B-schools across the country. The CMAT score is accepted by the leading institutions of the country that offer postgraduate programmes in management studies. For more information, refer to the website www.aicte-cmat.in.
A well-planned approach did wonders for Sagar Padaki, who bagged all-India rank 2 in the February 2013 edition of CMAT. Padaki says, “One must go through the questions and the choices he/she makes as the options in the questions are really close and can be confusing. One should target a section wise score to cross the 300 mark; quantitative techniques and data interpretation section (above 85), logical reasoning (above 95), language comprehension (above 75), general awareness (above 50).”
