The last date for the lieutenant governor to take a decision on the nursery admission process, December 17, is up but nothing’s been announced yet. The Directorate of Education has asked Delhi high court to give more time to the LG to decide — especially given the context of the hung assembly — and the matter will come up for hearing on Wednesday.
The process of admissions into entry-level classes of private-unaided schools has been inordinately stressful this year with a PIL by an activist group leading the Delhi HC to direct the LG, Najeeb Jung, to decide on it. Lawyer-activist group, Social Jurist, believes the existing system of categories and points is essentially “screening” and, therefore, a violation of the RTE Act 2009. They had made a representation to the LG but had to go to court to get him to act on it.
